Heavy Snow Brings More Ski Tourists to Japan

Parts of Japan are seeing their heaviest snowfall in years — and it's bringing more and more people to the country's ski areas this season.

It was a slow start to the season with not much snowfall, but things changed over the past few weeks. One city in Aomori Prefecture had its heaviest snowfall in 40 years on February 1, according to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Niseko, a popular ski area on the island of Hokkaido, had near-record levels of snow in January, according to data from a website called SnowJapan. The website also said there was an increase in visitors that month.

The snowfall has brought many visitors to the country's ski areas, especially Americans, who are booking trips at the last minute because of low levels of snow in ski areas of the US and Canada.

One Australian travel company told Bloomberg that interest in ski trips to Japan has doubled this season compared to last year, and interest for next winter is already up 27% compared to last year.

However, while skiers and snowboarders are enjoying the snowfall, it's causing problems in other parts of Japan, including snow-related accidents, as well as flight delays and cancellations.

And the increase in visitors to ski areas is not always good news for residents, some of whom have complained about the problems caused by these tourists, including noise and drunken behavior.

For example, Hakuba Village, a popular ski area in Nagano Prefecture, has had increasing problems with bad behavior from ski tourists.

In December, the village announced new rules to try and stop this. From July, disruptive behavior may come with a fine of 50,000 yen, which is about $320.

例えば、長野県で人気のスキー場である白馬村では、スキー客による迷惑行為の問題が増加している。

12月、同村はこれを抑止するため新たな条例を発表した。 7月からは迷惑行為に対して5万円（約320ドル）の罰金が科される可能性がある。
