A new study has found that young adults in Japan often have less healthy diets than older people in the country.
Researchers from the University of Tokyo did a study with about 4,500 people in Japan. The people were as old as 79, and as young as just 1.
The researchers asked them — or their parents — to write down what they ate and drank for eight days. Then, they gave them diet scores.
The researchers looked at two things: the foods people ate, like fruit and vegetables, and the nutrients they got, like vitamins.
Men who were around 23 years old, and women who were around 16, had the lowest scores for the foods they ate. After that, their scores got better almost every year they got older.
For nutrients, both men's and women's scores went up until around age 10. But then they went down quickly, until they were at their lowest around age 24. After that, nutrient scores started slowly going up again.
The study also found that people from families with more money and education had healthier diets. And smokers and people who skip breakfast in the morning had less healthy diets.
The researchers said teens and young adults may find it harder to eat well because their lives are changing so much at that age.
But they said it's important to teach young people how to eat healthily.
