Life Satisfaction Falls in S. Korea, New Data Finds

Life satisfaction among South Koreans fell in 2023 for the first time in four years, according to new government data.

Compared to the world's other rich nations, South Korea ranked 33rd out of 38 for life satisfaction.

People's levels of satisfaction were ranked from 0 to 10. The average level of satisfaction in the country was 6.4 in 2023, a small decrease from 6.5 in 2022.

That's lower than the global average, which is about 6.7.

Satisfaction in the country had actually increased during the coronavirus pandemic.

The survey found that money was an important factor in people's levels of satisfaction.

It's often said that money can't buy happiness — but perhaps it can make life a little easier. South Korean households making less than 1 million won per month — about $700 — had lower levels of satisfaction.

The average among this group was 5.7, while households making more than 6 million won — about $4,200 — had an average score of 6.6.

People in their 40s also had an average score of 6.6; they were the happiest group. People older than 60 had the lowest average score by age — 6.2.

It has sometimes been said that older people in the country don't get enough help from the government.

Although the South Korean economy is quite strong, some people have said that the government should focus more on its people's lives and less on economic growth.
