Too Fast? Ramen Jiro's 20-Minute Rule Sparks Debate

Ramen Jiro is one of the most famous ramen chains in Japan, known for its rich pork broth and very large bowls.

Eating there isn't just a quick meal — it can feel like a challenge! The portions can be very big, with over 300 grams of noodles and more than 1,600 calories in one bowl. Regular customers love Ramen Jiro so much that they even have their own name — "Jirorians."

But even a popular place like Ramen Jiro can upset its fans.

At one of the chain's Tokyo restaurants, a sign was placed above the ticket machine, asking customers to finish their meals in 20 minutes. Soon after, the shop posted the same message on social media. The message, posted by the restaurant's manager, said that some people were eating too slowly, which made it hard to seat new customers.

However, many fans were upset by the new rule.

People said the rule made the restaurant feel too intimidating, saying ramen should be something to enjoy at your own pace. Others thought the shop cared more about speed than about the customers themselves, which didn't feel very respectful.

But some agreed with the rule, saying Ramen Jiro has always been fast-paced and intense.

"If you can't handle the pace, don't come," one Jirorian wrote online.

But Ramen Jiro's portions are so large that finishing a bowl quickly isn't easy, even for regular customers. And after many complaints online, the shop deleted the message, posting an apology on social media.

The shop agreed that its wording made the restaurant look intimidating, and said that wasn't its intention. The sign was also taken down.

So Jirorians are once again free to take as long as they need with their big bowls of ramen!
