Keeping your home clean and tidy is hard work. Here are some useful expressions for talking about housework.

If you're a "neat freak," then you really hate when things are dirty or messy. And you probably don't like "slobs," which is what we call people who are lazy and don't clean up after themselves.

As winter comes to an end, a lot of people around the world give their homes a really good clean. We call this "spring cleaning."

A good spring clean will get every bit of your house "spick and span," which is another way of saying very clean. You might also call your home "clean as a whistle," which means the same thing.

You might find you need to use a lot of "elbow grease," or physical effort, to get some rooms spick and span. This expression probably comes from the fact the elbow is used a lot when cleaning, while the word "grease" may refer to sweat.

A house can be clean but still have too many things in it to be tidy. Objects that make your house feel untidy, especially things you might not need anymore, are called "clutter."

But you can always "declutter" your house by taking those items and putting them somewhere else — like in a cupboard where you won't see them, or even the trash!
