S. Korean Content Creators Made $1.2 Billion Last Year

Only a few years ago, people might have laughed at anyone who said they wanted to work as a YouTuber or content creator.

Now, data shows that there are almost 25,000 content creators just in South Korea.

At least, that's the number of content creators who reported their income last year in the country. In 2019, there were just 1,327 content creators who reported their income in South Korea.

Between them, they made 1.79 trillion won last year, which is more than $1.2 billion. That works out to an average of more than 75 million won each — or $49,500.

That's quite a lot more than the average yearly wage in South Korea.

However, the data from the National Tax Service shows that some content creators are earning a lot more than others.

In fact, the top 1% of earners — 247 people — made 327 billion won between them. That's about $227 million, which is an average of almost $1 million per person.

But lawmakers have said that more tax checks may need to be done on content creators.

Chung Il-young of the Democratic Party of Korea said the number of tax checks has stayed almost the same even as the money made by content creators has increased significantly.

YouTube is very popular in South Korea. According to a study released last year, South Koreans were the biggest YouTube users in the world in August 2024.

The study found that South Korean smartphone users spent more than 117 billion minutes on the app during August.
