Airport Takes 10 Tons of Kimchi from Carry-on Bags

Most airports don't let you bring liquids over 100 milliliters in your airplane carry-on bags. But at South Korea's Incheon International Airport, this rule affects one of the country's most famous dishes — kimchi.

Because it is packed in liquid, kimchi is thought of as a liquid under airport rules. And in 2024, security officers at Incheon confiscated 10.7 metric tons of kimchi from passengers who tried to bring it in their carry-on luggage.

Kimchi isn't the only Korean food being confiscated. In 2023, the airport also took away 10.5 metric tons of jang — Korean sauces and pastes such as gochujang. Similar to kimchi, these often come in liquid form, so travelers can't put them in their carry-on bags.

And it's not just food from Korea that gets taken away, either. Some travelers have had problems bringing certain foreign food items into the country, too.

One example is Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel seasoning from the US. The seasoning is a mix made from sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, salt and poppy seeds. It became popular on TikTok, and many travelers brought it back to South Korea.

However, because the seasoning has poppy seeds, which are banned in South Korea, travelers cannot bring it into the country.

Now, signs in Korean and English are posted in the airport telling travelers not to bring Everything But the Bagel seasoning into the country.

So if you're flying to — or from — South Korea, be careful what you pack in your luggage!

また、没収されるのは韓国の食べ物だけではない。 一部の旅行者は、特定の外国産食品を同国に持ち込む際にも問題を抱えてきた。

その一例は、米国のトレーダージョーズのエブリシング・バット・ザ・ベーグルという調味料だ。 この調味料はゴマ、乾燥ニンニク、乾燥タマネギ、塩、ケシの実を混ぜたものだ。 ティックトックで人気となり、多くの旅行者が韓国に持ち帰った。

しかし、この調味料には韓国で禁止されているケシの実が含まれているため、旅行者は同国に持ち込むことができない。

現在、同空港には韓国語と英語のサインが掲示され、エブリシング・バット・ザ・ベーグルという調味料を同国に持ち込まないよう旅行者に呼び掛けている。

それで韓国発着の飛行機に乗る場合は、荷物に何を入れるかに注意しよう。
