Robotic Exoskeletons Help Chinese Mountain Climbers

In the eastern Chinese province of Shandong, is a mountain called Mount Tai — or Taishan in Chinese — that has long been famous for its beautiful views. The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has millions of visitors every year.

But all of those visitors face the same problem — the 7,000 steps they have to take to get to the top of the 1,500-meter-high mountain!

Earlier this year, some of those mountain climbers had some help in the form of robotic exoskeletons that gave some extra power to their legs.

Ten exoskeletons were introduced at the mountain for a short trial between January 29 and February 4. Around 200 people paid between $8 and $11 to use the devices, which are attached to the waist and thighs and weigh just 1.8 kilograms.

The exoskeletons use AI that can sense and help the user's movements to stop their legs from getting too tired.

The trial was run by Taishan Cultural Tourism Group (TCTG), working with the company that made the exoskeletons, Kenqing Technology.

Wang Houzhe of the TCTG said that the exoskeletons were introduced to help older people enjoy climbing the mountain, instead of having a limited view from a cable car.

According to CNN half the people who used the exoskeletons during the trial at Mount Tai were senior citizens.

In addition to helping older people and regular hikers, Kenqing Technology believes that its product could be used to help rescue services, industrial workers, and disabled people.

"It really works! It felt like someone was pulling me uphill!" a 68-year-old tourist at Mount Tai told Xinhua News Agency.

CNNによると、泰山での試験運用中に外骨格ロボットを利用した人の半数は高齢者だった。

Kenqing Technologyは、同社の製品は高齢者や一般のハイカーをサポートするだけでなく、救助隊、産業労働者、障害者のサポートにも利用できると考えている。

泰山を訪れた68歳の観光客は、「これは本当に役立ちます。上り坂で誰かが私を引っ張ってくれているように感じました」と新華社に語った。
