Yokai Exhibition Coming to Tokyo, Spring 2026
妖怪展、2026年春 東京にやってくる

Fans of the strange and supernatural will be excited for an exhibition all about Japanese yokai that is coming to Tokyo in March 2026.

The word yokai is a little difficult to translate because it includes all kinds of monsters, spirits and other strange things that are a part of Japanese folklore. Yokai come in all shapes and sizes, and while some are dangerous, others just like to play tricks on people.

Visitors can learn more about yokai at the Yokai Immersive Experience Exhibition, which is coming soon to Tokyo after being shown in Nagoya last year.

The Tokyo exhibition will show famous yokai art from the past and use digital technology to make visitors feel like they are really in the world of yokai. The art will include original ukiyo-e prints by Kuniyoshi Utagawa, as well as valuable paintings and other works of art from the 19th century and earlier.

As well as rare art from Nishio City Iwase Bunko Library and models of yokai from the Yokai Art Museum on Shodoshima Island, there will be 3D computer graphics, holographic screens, and projection mapping to really bring the supernatural world to life.

This is an interactive exhibition made to be fun for children and adults, but visitors will also be able to learn more about the history and stories of the yokai, and how supernatural creatures like long-nosed tengu, oni demons, or kappa water monsters became an important part of modern Japanese pop culture.

Although the art itself should be easy to understand, information will be given in both Japanese and English.

The Yokai Immersive Experience Exhibition will be shown in Warehouse Terrada in Shinagawa, Tokyo from March 27 to June 28.
