Osaka Metro Tests AI Robot Station Worker

Finding your way in a big train station can be confusing. Where do you change trains? Where's the elevator? And where can you find a good place to eat?

At one busy station in Osaka, for one week, passengers were able to get these questions answered by an unusual worker — a human-like robot.

Osaka Metro tested the robot, which uses AI, at Umeda Station between August 31 and September 6. It could answer questions in about 60 languages, including English and Chinese.

For example, if a passenger said, "I want to go to Osaka Castle," the robot would explain which route to take. It could also give information about places to visit nearby.

To answer some questions, the robot showed a QR code on a screen. Passengers could then scan it and get the information on their phones.

Many passengers were interested in meeting the station's newest staff member on its first day. When the robot's information counter opened at 1 p.m., people quickly formed a line to talk to it.

Some people said they were surprised by the robot's human-like facial expressions and enjoyed asking it questions.

Osaka Metro hopes robots like this can improve service and help with worker shortages. Robots could also give human station workers more time for important jobs such as safety checks.

Another test of the robot is running at Osaka's Tanimachi 9-chome Station between September 9 and 15.

The tests will help Osaka Metro decide whether human-like robots could work well as station staff, a company spokesperson told The Mainichi.
