Whether it's looking at social media, checking messages or just scrolling online, many of us spend a lot of time on our smartphones — maybe too much!
And a survey of almost 10,000 US adults by Pew Research Center has found that 53% think they spend too much time on their smartphones. Only 36% said they use theirs the right amount, while a tiny 3% actually thought they should use it more. Some didn't answer, or don't have a smartphone.
Unsurprisingly, younger people were more likely to feel like they spend too much time on their smartphones. Seventy percent of people aged 18 to 29 said they use their phones too much, as did 64% of those aged 30 to 39.
That fell to 49% among 50-to-64-year-olds, while only 25% of people aged 65 and older said they spend too much time on their phones.
Many Americans are trying to use their phones less. Forty-five percent said they've tried to reduce how much time they spend on their phones in the last year, although with mixed results.
Only 25% of those who tried to cut back said their attempt had been "extremely" or "very" successful, though 52% said they were "somewhat" successful. The other 23% said they'd had little or no success.
Smartphones do help people, though — three out of four respondents said smartphones help them stay informed about the world, and around half said they help them feel connected to others.
However, while 30% said their phones are good for productivity, 34% said they have a negative effect on productivity. And 41% said smartphone use negatively affects how much sleep they get.
So if you think you spend too much time on your phone, you're not alone — and if you fail at cutting that time back, you're also not alone!
