Japanese Woman Arrested for Squashing a Cheese Bun

A 40-year-old Japanese woman has been arrested for criminal damage after squeezing a bag of cream cheese buns that cost about 180 yen, or $1.20.

The incident took place in a Lawson store in Fukuoka prefecture. The woman told police she was just checking how firm the buns were, and she said she didn't squeeze them very hard.

The buns were still sealed, but because one of them was squashed and damaged, they couldn't be sold.

This wasn't the woman's first time damaging the shop's products, according to the store's manager. He told police he had noticed her squashing other products in the past, so he was watching her to see if she did it again.

As the woman was about to leave the store, the manager saw the bun had been damaged, and asked her to pay for it. But when the woman left the store without paying, he followed her and held her until the police arrived and arrested her.

Online, reactions to the woman's arrest have been mixed. Some say arresting her was too much, and what the woman did wouldn't be thought of as a crime in other countries. Others say it shows how safe Japan is, if this is the kind of crime police focus on.

Property damage is becoming a problem in Japan, and over the last few years there has been an increase in similar cases.

In 2020, for example, a 60-year-old woman in Hokkaido was arrested for poking holes in expensive melons with her fingers.
