Why Google Maps Doesn't Work in South Korea

Google Maps, perhaps the world's most popular GPS app, has over 1 billion users per month, according to Google.

But few of those users are likely to be from South Korea, because the app doesn't work properly there.

Some might find this surprising, since South Korea is one of Asia's most tech-savvy and tourist-friendly countries.

There are other GPS apps that work, like Kakao Map and Naver Map. And you can have the Google Maps app on your phone, but it won't be very useful if you ask it for directions.

It's one of only a few countries in the world — like China and Syria — where the app doesn't work.

Soyun Ahn, a researcher who wrote a paper about this issue, told CNN that tension between Google and South Korea started in 2008, when the wrong names were given to some South Korean places on Google Maps.

But the issue is, of course, bigger than that.

To work properly, Google needs some map data that the South Korean government doesn't want to share.

South Korea provides a 1:25,000 scale map for free online. Google needs a 1:5,000 scale map, but South Korea won't let it have that for security reasons.

However, Google has said the map data it needs has already been checked to make sure sensitive places, like government buildings, are removed. It has also said it will blur any other locations required by the South Korean government.

With more tourists visiting the country, it's believed South Korea may change its mind soon. The government is set to make a decision on Google's latest data request by October.

正常に機能するためには、グーグルは韓国政府が提供を望まない地図データを必要とする。

韓国は縮尺1:25,000の地図をオンラインで無料で提供している。 グーグルは縮尺1:5,000の地図を必要としているが、韓国は安全保障上の理由から提供していない。
