Why Are Young Europeans So Good at English?

This February, The Conversation published an article called, "Why Sweden's young people are so good at English."

It's true that many Swedish teenagers and adults are very good at English. But Sweden isn't the only country where this is true.

According to the latest proficiency list published by Swiss language company EF, the country with the best English is actually the Netherlands.

Croatia, Austria, Germany, Norway, Portugal and Denmark came next, while Sweden was eighth, ahead of Belgium and Slovakia.

So let's ask instead: What makes all of these countries so good at English? Because a lot of the answers are the same.

For one thing, there's an appreciation in these countries that knowing English is very important. Their native languages aren't spoken in many places around the world, making English a good next choice for business, academia and travel.

And other than Germany, they're all quite small. If you take Germany out of the top 10, the other nine countries have a combined population of about 81 million. That's about 40 million fewer than the population of Japan.

Children in these countries are also taught English from a young age, and their languages often share quite a lot of similarities with English.

In all these countries, the alphabet is Latin-based, and there are a lot of common words between the local language and English. English is a Germanic language, like Dutch, German and Swedish, which can make it easier to learn.

Residents of these countries are also exposed to a lot of English-language shows and movies. Many of these are subtitled, not dubbed, which helps with language learning. Their familiarity with English also makes it easier for them to enjoy online gaming and music in English.

Not all Europeans speak good English. But it's clear to see why many have an advantage.
