Reading for Pleasure Improves Well-being

Reading for pleasure can improve people's health and well-being at any age, according to researchers from the University of Cambridge.

And it doesn't matter whether you're reading Shakespeare or your favorite comic book — the benefits are the same!

In a review of previous surveys and studies, the researchers found that reading for pleasure was linked to several benefits, including better brain and mental health, improved cognitive performance and a lower risk of cognitive decline.

One study included in the review looked at the benefits of reading on over 10,000 children and found that those who began reading in early childhood had better focus, better memory, fewer mental health problems and did better at school. They also behaved better, slept better, had a better social life and spent less time looking at screens.

For people of all ages, reading was found to be linked with lower levels of stress, reduced loneliness, a better understanding of others, and improved social connections.

One survey of over 4,000 adults found that just 6 minutes of reading was enough to reduce stress by 68%.

Participants also said that books had helped them to make important life choices — like finding a new job — and had also helped them to understand other people's feelings better, and stay calm during disagreements.

In later life, reading can also help to keep the brain healthy. A study of around 5,400 adults aged over 55 found that reading was linked with a lower risk of cognitive decline. And another study of around 470 adults aged over 75 found that reading was linked with a 35% reduced risk of developing dementia.

The researchers also noted the emotional and social benefits of taking part in book clubs and reading groups. A number of studies have shown that book clubs help people of all ages to feel more socially connected.

However, the researchers said that reading groups can be particularly beneficial for older people who may not be able to take part in more physical social activities.
