Do You Know More Words than a Native Speaker?

Do you know the official language of the US? What about the official language of the sky? These four facts about English may surprise you!

1. English is the official language of the sky.

All international pilots must have upper intermediate English, or B2 on the CEFR scale. This is about the same as a TOEIC score between 785 and 940, or an IELTS score of 5.5 to 6.5.

2. Native speakers only know about 4 percent of English words.

Most English speakers know between 20,000 and 40,000 words, or about 3 to 5 percent of the estimated 750,000 English words. However, you only need to know 1,000 words to understand about 80 percent of all written English.

3. English is not the official language of the US.

The US doesn’t have an official language. However, many states have made English their official language; and English is the most common language in the country, with over 240 million speakers.

The next most common languages are Spanish, with over 43 million speakers, and Chinese, with nearly 3.5 million speakers. Next are French, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Korean!

4. The most commonly used English noun is "time."

The most common noun in English is "time." Others include "year," "people," "life," "school" and "family."

The most commonly used verb is "be," but "have," "do," "say," "go," and "get" are also very common. And the most commonly used word of all is "the."
